New Online Book Clubs - Anytime, Anywhere

By the end of November, Emma Clark Library patrons will have access to multiple, low-commitment online book clubs, in which readers can log on and participate anytime, from anywhere.

After signing up online, patrons will receive a daily email from one or more books clubs they have chosen to join.  The email will include a short, 5-minute excerpt from a book.  If they like the “teasers” they’ve read that week, they may stop by the library to borrow the book and finish it.  If they are not impressed by the excerpt, there is no pressure to read more.  They can simply wait for next week’s book.  Each week a different book is highlighted through the service provider, DearReader.com.  Participants may choose from genres such as Classics, Fiction, Mystery, and Non-Fiction.

These book clubs are perfect for people who would love to join a club, but do not have access to one through family and friends.  Or for those whose schedules do not permit them to join a regular book club.  There is no obligation to read the book or attend meetings at certain times.  Readers may comment and discuss online – anytime, at their convenience – with other booklovers from all over the United States and Canada.

As a bonus, sometimes the authors are encouraged to join discussions of their books as well.
“We are excited that this will be a gateway to reading and discussing great books for our patrons who may not have had this opportunity previously,” says Connie Roberts, the Reference Librarian who spearheaded the project.

The book club will be easy to find on the library’s homepage, www.emmaclark.org, starting the end of November.  Click on “Online Book Clubs” and register your email.

Library Employees to Speak at Internet Librarian Conference in Monterey, California

This month, Emma Clark Library’s Director, Ted Gutmann, along with Robert Johnson, Manager of Information and Technology Services, will present at the Internet Librarian Conference in Monterey, California.  The conference will be held October 28 – 30 and is expected to be attended by thousands of librarians from around the world.

Mr. Gutmann and Mr. Johnson’s program will feature mobile library applications and the steps necessary to design and develop an effective library app.  They will also discuss the pros, cons, and tips for a digital extension of library services.

“Emma mobile”, launched in November 2012, is a free app available for both Apple and Android.  It was featured in Computers in Libraries Magazine in February of this year and is rated 5 stars in the iTunes store.  As of October 2013, there have been 2,065 downloads for the app.

With this app, users can:
  • Store and display a digital version of their library card on their mobile device
  • Scan an ISBN and automatically search the library’s catalog to see if Emma Clark owns it – and if so, place a hold on the item
  • Automatically log-in to search online databases and check their account
  • Receive notifications about their items on hold, fines, and when their card needs to be renewed
  • Search the library catalog
  • View the library calendar of events
  • Get turn-by-turn directions to the library
  • Receive one-touch phone and/or email to the library
"This is where everything is going," says Mr. Gutmann. "Our computers are going to be these handheld devices, and Emma Clark is at the forefront of that."

Emma Clark Library to bring floating collection of young adult books to RC Murphy Junior High

Starting this school year, Emma Clark Library and RC Murphy Junior High will begin a partnership where the library will bring a floating collection of young adult books to the school to give the students greater access to a wider variety of books.

Nanette Feder, Teen Services Librarian at Emma Clark, approached Betsy Knox, School Librarian, with the idea in the spring.  The program gives RC Murphy Junior High the opportunity to circulate much of the young adult fiction that they do not have in their collection.  Additionally, library circulation drops during the school year because many teens are too busy with school and extracurricular activities to get to the library, so it is a win-win situation for all.  RC Murphy was chosen because it is the secondary school in the district that is farthest from the library, and therefore those children live further away which makes it more difficult to get to the library.

The library will be lending approximately 100 age-appropriate paperback and hardcover books at a time.  The books will have a 3-month loan period which would be extended if necessary. The library would then swap out 25% of the collection every 2 months.  The school will set aside a bookcase to house this collection and identify it as Emma Clark Library’s books.

This is the second program of its type – back in May, the library started a floating collection with the Long Island State Veterans Home.

If you have any questions about the floating collection with RC Murphy Junior High, you may contact Nanette at 941-4080 ext. 116 or email her at teens@emmaclark.org.

New Teen Tech Clinic to begin in September

Starting September 17th, local teen volunteers will be available in the Computer Lab to answer computer questions and help you learn how to use your mobile devices including cell phones, tablets, and e-readers.  This program will continue on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month (except holidays) from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

“Teens in the community are always looking for opportunities to earn community service, and there are many adults in the community who need help with learning how to use their mobile devices, so it is perfect,” says Nanette Feder, Teen Services Librarian.

The dates the tech clinic will be held during the rest of 2013 are as follows:  September 17, October 1, October 15, November 19, December 3, and December 17.

Appointments are encouraged, but not required.  If you would like to make an appointment, contact the Adult Reference Desk at 631.941.4080 ext. 127.

If you would like to become a teen volunteer, you may contact Nanette Feder, Teen Services Librarian, at 941-4080 ext. 116 or email her at teens@emmaclark.org.

Emma Clark Library Invites Local Authors for New Collection

Continuing its tradition of recognizing and encouraging all writers in the community, Emma Clark Library invites authors who live or work in and around the Three Village Community to donate one copy of each of their published books to the library for a new “Local Focus” collection.

"Benefiting both local authors and our readers, the new Local Focus will let readers easily browse both critically reviewed and not-yet-discovered titles by authors who live and work in the communities surrounding the library, as it simultaneously introduces those authors to their neighbors,” explains Joan S. Kahnhauser, Head Adult Reference Librarian.

The library welcomes both Adult and Children’s books, and titles more appropriate for children will be kept in the Children’s Room.  The collections will be shelved alphabetically by author keeping the focus where it belongs – on the author.  Books will be searchable by both title and author in the library catalog.

All titles will remain in the catalog and be available on request for three years.  At the library’s discretion, certain titles may be relocated into the main circulating collection and considered part of the long-established Three Village Author Collection.

The Emma S. Clark Memorial Library, located at 120 Main Street in Setauket, provides public library service to all residents of the Three Village Central School District.

Teen Volunteers at Emma Clark Library to visit Jefferson’s Ferry for Tech Assistance

On Wednesday, July 31st, teen volunteers from Emma Clark Library will be at Jefferson’s Ferry, a retirement community in South Setauket, from 10:00am – 12:00noon to provide tutoring services for residents on any technical devices such as iPads, cell phones, etc.

Jennifer Mullen, Adult Services Librarian, and Nanette Feder, Teen Services Librarian, approached Jefferson’s Ferry with the idea that our teen volunteers can help out many seniors in the community with bringing them into the 21st century.  Jefferson Ferry’s Librarian Claire Donohue and Allison Halperin, Program & Services Coordinator, have been instrumental in making this program happen.

“Many times the overwhelming feeling when dealing with technology today is frustration. The Library saw a need to help our seniors in our community to overcome this frustration. What better way to do it than starting with Jefferson’s Ferry,” says Ms. Mullen.  “There, we can help our seniors become more familiar with their devices – help them understand how they work and tweak them to meet their certain needs. Teens in our community will sit down with an individual to do just that – make them feel comfortable.”

In the Fall, Emma Clark hopes to make this a regularly occurring program with teen volunteers visiting Jefferson’s Ferry monthly.

This program is for Jefferson’s Ferry residents only.  However, the library does hold regular technology workshops for all Three Village residents.  Visit www.emmaclark.org or call 631.941.4080 for a listing of workshops.

If you have any questions about the Teen Tech program at Jefferson’s Ferry, or would like to become a teen volunteer, you may contact Nanette at 941.4080 ext. 116 or email her at teens@emmaclark.org.

Explore Emma's Garden

Have you ever walked around the beautiful grounds of Emma Clark Library and wondered about the plantings? No need to wonder anymore!

Emma Clark has just unveiled a new project, Emma’s Garden. There is brand new signage identifying plantings for the curious public, including a tool for the tech-savvy. Each sign includes a QR code. Simply hold your mobile device up to the code, and it will bring you to a webpage with more information on the planting – such as origin, bloom time and zones – along with how much sun, type of soil, and the height and spread of the planting to help you decide if you’d like to plant them in your own garden. Webpages include links to "how-to" videos, as well as gardening book recommendations that may be checked out from the library.

Emma’s Garden includes flowers such as Hydrangeas, Day Lilies, and Black-Eyed Susans; bushes such as Beautyberrys, Rhododendrons, Cherry Laurels, Double Fire Virbinum, and Butterfly Bushes; and trees such as American Hollys, Kwanzan Cherry Trees, and multiple varieties of Crabapple.

Garden research was done by Nancy McCaffrey, Adult Reference Librarian, along with Dianne Greco, Administrative Assistant. Book recommendations were compiled by Jennifer Mullen, Adult Reference Librarian.

Come stop by to see the quaint and historic grounds of Emma Clark Library.
There is no need to register or be a resident to enjoy its beauty.

Emma Clark Library delivers books to Long Island State Veterans Home

Emma Clark Library has just started a new program with the Long Island State Veterans Home at Stony Brook University.  Volunteers from the library brought around 60 large print books to the home, and they plan on rotating the books about once a month.  Books are selected by Connie Roberts, Adult Reference Librarian at Emma Clark.

The Veterans Home is very excited about our new partnership with Emma Clark Library,” says Susan K. Helmus, Director of Volunteer Services.  ”Our residents can really benefit from large print books, yet over the years we have found these hard to come by.  The partnership with Emma Clark Library is such a wonderful resource for our residents.  They are looking forward to perusing the large assortment of titles.”

For some patrons, it is difficult getting to the physical library building for a variety of reasons, including transportation and health issues.  This partnership brings the library to them.  The program with the Veterans Home will be ongoing, and the library hopes to expand this service to other senior homes in the community as well.

The Long Island State Veterans Home provides high quality and compassionate health care services for veterans and their families.

Emma Clark Library Director Ted Gutmann and Manager of Information & Technology Robert Johnson speak at Long Island Library Conference

Emma Clark Library Director Ted Gutmann, along with Robert Johnson, Manager of Information and Technology, spoke at the Long Island Library Conference on May 2 at the Melville Marriott.  Mr. Gutmann discussed the “Promises and Perils of Mobile Communication” (including a demonstration of Emma Clark’s mobile app) and Mr. Johnson covered “Where Reference Meets Technology.”   Mr. Johnson is a member of Computer and Technical Services (CATS) which is a division of The Suffolk County Library Association.
There were nearly 700 attendees for the entire day, and the CATS programs seemed to be most popular.  There were about 130 people in the mobile app session and nearly 100 in the reference and technology session.
“Mobile technologies have finally hit the mainstream for libraries.  No longer held back by technology, the possibilities have become seemingly limitless.  Reaching out to patrons that may not realize the resources and services the library has to offer is what it's all about" said presenter Bob Johnson. "The patrons love the look and feel of Emma Mobile, after all, it's their application, just like it's their library!"

Emma Clark Library at Long Island’s 13th Annual Cherry Blossom Festival

Emma Clark Library was thrilled to be a part of Long Island’s 13th Annual Cherry Blossom Festival at Stony Brook University. The festival was held at the Charles B. Wang Center this past Saturday, May 4, and approximately 200 – 250 people were in attendance.

Emma’s table included a sampling of our collection on Japanese culture, which patrons with a valid library card could borrow right there at the festival.   People enjoyed perusing the books, as well as learning more about the town’s library.

“It was a very enthusiastic crowd “says Jennifer Mullen, Adult Reference Librarian who represented Emma Clark at the festival.  “Even those who aren't patrons of Emma Clark were able to use us as a resource on which books they could borrow from their own libraries.  And in general, people learned more about what Emma Clark has to offer – not just books, but anything from information on mobile technology to MANGO, our free online language-learning system.”

Emma S. Clark Memorial Library partners with Long Island Museum

The Emma S. Clark Memorial Library is partnering with The Long Island Museum of American Art, History, and Carriages to provide a unique learning experience at the museum on Wednesday, April 17 from 2:00 – 4:30 p.m.  Participants will tour the exhibit, An Artful Life, and then stay for a discussion led by Carolyn Emerson and Deidre Doran, Reference Librarians, on the book Strapless:  John Singer Sargent and the Fall of Madame X.

This partnership is one of many that the library is pursuing in order to expand its presence within the community.  According to Emerson, “the library is no longer just a physical space; it is, increasingly, a virtual presence existing outside of the building’s walls.  This has lead us to broaden our thinking about the library’s role.  Therefore, we are seeking to become more of a presence in other venues in the community and to collaborate more with other institutions.”

The April 17 program is currently sold out, but anyone interested in signing up for the wait list should call the library at (631) 941-4080 x.115.  Or add your name to the wait list online by visiting www.emmaclark.org.

For a copy of Deborah Davis’ book, Strapless, patrons are encouraged to call for availability or reserve it online at www.emmaclark.org.
