New eBook Lender - Freading - added to Library's offerings

Emma Clark Library is pleased to announce the addition of a new Ebook collection, Freading.  All you need is a valid library card.  This service is in addition to the library’s other downloadable collections, Overdrive and 3M Cloud.  New titles are added on a weekly basis.

Freading features an eclectic mix of titles from smaller publishers, and is intended to complement the library’s primary Overdrive selection of eBooks.  The system works on a "token" system. Each book is assigned a token value (visible in the upper left-hand corner of the book jacket). You may download books worth up to a combined total of 10 tokens each week.

Library Director Ted Gutmann - Grand Marshal of the Three Village Electric Holiday Parade

Library Director Ted Gutmann has been named Grand Marshal of this year's Three Village Electric Holiday Parade, an annual tradition in the community.  The parade will be held on Sunday, December 15 at 5:00 p.m.

“Emma Clark Library has been so helpful, and we are so excited to have the privilege of having Ted Gutmann as Grand Mashal this year!” says Michael Ardolino, Committee Chair of the Parade. 





The parade route begins at the library and will proceed down Main Street. The library will also serve as one of the refreshment areas prior to the start time. 

Please note: In order to accommodate the Holiday Parade, which will assemble in front of the library, the library building will be closing early that day - 3:00 p.m.

New Online Book Clubs - Anytime, Anywhere

By the end of November, Emma Clark Library patrons will have access to multiple, low-commitment online book clubs, in which readers can log on and participate anytime, from anywhere.

After signing up online, patrons will receive a daily email from one or more books clubs they have chosen to join.  The email will include a short, 5-minute excerpt from a book.  If they like the “teasers” they’ve read that week, they may stop by the library to borrow the book and finish it.  If they are not impressed by the excerpt, there is no pressure to read more.  They can simply wait for next week’s book.  Each week a different book is highlighted through the service provider, DearReader.com.  Participants may choose from genres such as Classics, Fiction, Mystery, and Non-Fiction.

These book clubs are perfect for people who would love to join a club, but do not have access to one through family and friends.  Or for those whose schedules do not permit them to join a regular book club.  There is no obligation to read the book or attend meetings at certain times.  Readers may comment and discuss online – anytime, at their convenience – with other booklovers from all over the United States and Canada.

As a bonus, sometimes the authors are encouraged to join discussions of their books as well.

“We are excited that this will be a gateway to reading and discussing great books for our patrons who may not have had this opportunity previously,” says Connie Roberts, the Reference Librarian who spearheaded the project.

Library Employees to Speak at Internet Librarian Conference in Monterey, California

This month, Emma Clark Library’s Director, Ted Gutmann, along with Robert Johnson, Manager of Information and Technology Services, will present at the Internet Librarian Conference in Monterey, California.  The conference will be held October 28 – 30 and is expected to be attended by thousands of librarians from around the world.

Mr. Gutmann and Mr. Johnson’s program will feature mobile library applications and the steps necessary to design and develop an effective library app.  They will also discuss the pros, cons, and tips for a digital extension of library services.

“Emma mobile”, launched in November 2012, is a free app available for both Apple and Android.  It was featured in Computers in Libraries Magazine in February of this year and is rated 5 stars in the iTunes store.  As of October 2013, there have been 2,065 downloads for the app.

With this app, users can:

• Store and display a digital version of their library card on their mobile device
• Scan an ISBN and automatically search the library’s catalog to see if Emma Clark owns it – and if so, place a hold on the item
• Automatically log-in to search online databases and check their account
• Receive notifications about their items on hold, fines, and when their card needs to be renewed
• Search the library catalog
• View the library calendar of events
• Get turn-by-turn directions to the library
• Receive one-touch phone and/or email to the library

"This is where everything is going," says Mr. Gutmann. "Our computers are going to be these handheld devices, and Emma Clark is at the forefront of that."

Jeanette Martone's Face to Face: Drawings of common humanity and fragility of cultures

Jeanette Martone works from photos taken during her travels to the developing world where she volunteers for projects to assist the local community.  By limiting color, and emphasizing texture in her pencil drawings, attention is focused on the essential elements of the subject.
Ms. Martone attended SUNY Purchase, took courses in botanical illustration at the New York Botanical Gardens, and also spent a semester studying design and anthropology at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
Her works have been exhibited at museums and galleries in the U.S and abroad, including the Neuberger Museum in Purchase, New York, SXU Gallery at St. Xavier University, and Ai Gallery at the Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago, Illinois. In New York City, her work has been featured in exhibitions at Artists’ Space, Lincoln Center, Marymount Manhattan College Gallery, and the New York Botanical Gardens.  Her work has been published in the magazines “The Artists’ Magazine”, “American Artist Drawing”, “Art Calendar”, “The Other Side” and the books “Portrait Inspirations, “The Best of Oil Painting”, and “The Distillery”.

Emma Clark Children's Librarians to be at Long Island Apple Festival

Come down to the Long Island Apple Festival this coming Sunday, September 29. Emma Clark Children's Librarians will be there for an "apple-themed" storytime at 12:30.

Museum Passes are here!

Early this year, Emma Clark Library patrons responded to a survey regarding services, and in particular, many expressed an interest in museum passes.  The wait is over!  

We now have Museum Passes for the following local cultural institutions:

Emma Clark Library to bring floating collection of young adult books to RC Murphy Junior High

Starting this school year, Emma Clark Library and RC Murphy Junior High will begin a partnership where the library will bring a floating collection of young adult books to the school to give the students greater access to a wider variety of books.

Nanette Feder, Teen Services Librarian at Emma Clark, approached Betsy Knox, School Librarian, with the idea in the spring.  The program gives RC Murphy Junior High the opportunity to circulate much of the young adult fiction that they do not have in their collection.  Additionally, library circulation drops during the school year because many teens are too busy with school and extracurricular activities to get to the library, so it is a win-win situation for all.  RC Murphy was chosen because it is the secondary school in the district that is farthest from the library, and therefore those children live further away which makes it more difficult to get to the library.

The library will be lending approximately 100 age-appropriate paperback and hardcover books at a time.  The books will have a 3-month loan period which would be extended if necessary. The library would then swap out 25% of the collection every 2 months.  The school will set aside a bookcase to house this collection and identify it as Emma Clark Library’s books.

This is the second program of its type – back in May, the library started a floating collection with the Long Island State Veterans Home.

New Teen Tech Clinic to begin in September

Starting September 17^th, local teen volunteers will be available in the Computer Lab to answer computer questions and help you learn how to use your mobile devices including cell phones, tablets, and e-readers.  This program will continue on the 1^st and 3^rd Tuesdays of the month (except holidays) from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. 

“Teens in the community are always looking for opportunities to earn community service, and there are many adults in the community who need help with learning how to use their mobile devices, so it is perfect,” says Nanette Feder, Teen Services Librarian.

The dates the tech clinic will be held during the rest of 2013 are as follows:  September 17, October 1, October 15, November 19, December 3, and December 17.

Appointments are encouraged, but not required.  If you would like to make an appointment, contact the Adult Reference Desk at 631.941.4080 ext. 127.

Congratulations to Emma Clark's 2013 Battle of the Books team!

Congratulations to our 2013 Battle of the Books team, The Vending Machine Magicians, for coming in FIRST place in Session 1 of the regional competition at Stony Brook University on Saturday! 
The team also won the team spirit award for the session.
5 assistant coaches (high school and college students, all former summer battle players) came to the competition to support the team, as well as helped out with the program all summer. We are incredibly grateful for their help.

Emma Clark Library Invites Local Authors for New Collection

Continuing its tradition of recognizing and encouraging all writers in the community, Emma Clark Library invites authors who live or work in and around the Three Village Community to donate one copy of each of their published books to the library for a new “Local Focus” collection.

"Benefiting both local authors and our readers, the new Local Focus will let readers easily browse both critically reviewed and not-yet-discovered titles by authors who live and work in the communities surrounding the library, as it simultaneously introduces those authors to their neighbors,” explains Joan S. Kahnhauser, Head Adult Reference Librarian.

The library welcomes both Adult and Children’s books, and titles more appropriate for children will be kept in the Children’s Room.  The collections will be shelved alphabetically by author keeping the focus where it belongs – on the author.  Books will be searchable by both title and author in the library catalog. 

All titles will remain in the catalog and be available on request for three years.  At the library’s discretion, certain titles may be relocated into the main circulating collection and considered part of the long-established Three Village Author Collection.

The Emma S. Clark Memorial Library, located at 120 Main Street in Setauket, provides public library service to all residents of the Three Village Central School District.
