Emma Clark Library Director Ted Gutmann, along with Robert
Johnson, Manager of Information and Technology, spoke at the Long Island
Library Conference on May 2 at the Melville Marriott. Mr. Gutmann discussed the “Promises and
Perils of Mobile Communication” (including a demonstration of Emma Clark’s
mobile app) and Mr. Johnson covered “Where Reference Meets Technology.” Mr. Johnson is a member of Computer and
Technical Services (CATS) which is a division of The Suffolk County Library
Association.
There were nearly 700 attendees for the entire day, and the
CATS programs seemed to be most popular.
There were about 130 people in the mobile app session and nearly 100 in
the reference and technology session.
“Mobile technologies have finally hit the mainstream for
libraries. No longer held back by
technology, the possibilities have become seemingly limitless. Reaching out to patrons that may not realize
the resources and services the library has to offer is what it's all
about" said presenter Bob Johnson. "The patrons love the look and
feel of Emma Mobile, after all, it's their application, just like it's their
library!"
